چکیده

Genetic selection in primary broiler breeders may modify skeletal structure, possibly impeding semen transfer, and could alter the size and degree of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of bilateral traits associated with fertility. Hence, we hypothesized specific morphometric traits could predict differential fertility. Sixty primary broiler breeder males from Strains A and B (n = 30/strain) were individually housed with an average of 10 females per male. Male fertility and sperm penetration (SP) through the perivitelline layer were estimated on fresh eggs. At 50 wk, BW, keel length (KL), posterior pelvic width and length (PPW, PPL), dorsal pelvic width and length (DPW, DPL), tarsometatarsal length and width (TL, TW), comb length and width (CL, CW), and wattle (

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate effects of strain [five in Experiment (Exp.) 1 and six in Exp. 2)] and age (29, 47, and 57 wk in Exp. 1 and 29, 41, and 52 wk in Exp. 2) of commercial broiler breeders on incubation time and chick weight. Highly significant differences in egg weight were found among strains in both Exp. After adjusting for effects of egg weight, significant effects of ...

Female-mediated causes and consequences of status change in a social fish.

In highly social species, dominant individuals often monopolize reproduction, resulting in reproductive investment that is status dependent. Yet, for subordinates, who typically invest less in reproduction, social status can change and opportunities to ascend to dominant social positions are presented suddenly, requiring abrupt changes in behaviour and physiology. In this study, we examined mal...

Androgens in a female primate: Relationships with reproductive status, age, dominance rank, fetal sex and secondary sexual color.

A comprehensive understanding of the role of androgens in reproduction, behavior and morphology requires the examination of female, as well as male, hormone profiles. However, we know far less about the biological significance of androgens in females than in males. We investigated the relationships between fecal androgen (immunoreactive testosterone) levels and reproductive status, age, dominan...

Physiology and Reproduction

The calpains (E.C. 3.4.22.17) and calpastatin constitute an ubiquitous, intracellular, Ca2+dependent protease/inhibitor system. This system has been implicated as a principal regulator of myofibrillar protein degradation in both ante-mortem and postmortem muscle. Although proteolytic activity of the calpains is primarily controlled through interaction of calpain and calpastatin, evidence for an...

Effect of Dietary Melatonin and L-Tryptophan on Growth Performance and Immune Responses ofBroiler Chicken under Experimental Aflatoxicosis

The aim of the present work was to determine whether the administration of melatonin or L-tryptophan (a precursor of melatonin) affects the immune responses and performance of broilers during induced exposure to aflatoxins in feed. The study was conducted from 0-6 weeks comprising six dietary treatments in triplicate with10 chickens in each replicate. The diets were formulated to supply 23% cr...
